Gynecomastia in Turkey

Gynecomastia Turkey

Gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction surgery is a plastic surgery for treating gynecomastia – a condition of excessively large breasts in men, by removing breast fat, tissue and skin and improving the appearance of the chest contours.
You will find a rich selection of clinics offering gynecomastia surgery in Turkey, particularly in the country’s cultural capital, Istanbul.

Gynecomastia procedure

Gynecomastia surgery can take from two to five hours and is performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation.
The procedure is perfomed either by making small incisions through which the excess fat is removed by liposuction, or, if required, by making longer incisions and removing the fat along with excess skin and tissue by excision. It is also possible to combine the two techniques. The method chosen for your surgery will depend on your particular condition and preference, and should be agreed upon during your consultation appointment.

Patient profile

Gynecomastia surgery is sought by patients with gynecomastia – a condition of excessively large breasts in men caused by hormonal changes, genetics, obesity or certain drugs.
You should be healthy, at a stable weight, and ideally not using any drugs and a nonsmoker in order to have a gynecomastia surgery.

Gynecomastia Costs

Costs of gynecomastia surgery can vary widely according to the surgeon’s experience and the exact type of procedure. Costs of gynecomastia surgery in Turkey, along with many other plastic surgery procedures, are much lower compared to Europe and the US.
In most cases, the costs of gynecomastia surgery are not covered by health insurance, as the procedure is mostly considered cosmetic as opposed to reconstructive. However, there are exceptions among health insurance companies so you should carefully check the exact policy of your health insurance provider concerning this procedure.
Always inquire with the clinic about the full price which takes into account not only the price of surgery, but additional costs such as anesthesia fees, operating room facilities and hospital costs, examinations, second procedure cost if necessary, etc.

During gynecomastia surgery consultations, the following is discussed: surgical goals; medical history; substances used currently, including medications, supplements, alcohol, drugs and tobacco; current health status; the expected outcome; postoperative care and potential complications.
Your surgeon might perform examinations to define the cause of your condition. The size and shape of the breasts are measured and examined as well as the nipples and surrounding skin. Photographs are taken and options for the gynecomastia surgery are discussed, after which the surgeon recommends an appropriate course of treatment.
It is advised to make full use of the consultation appointment in order to make as informed of a decision as possible. It is important for the success of the surgery to honestly answer to all of the surgeon’s inquiries and openly ask about anything requiring clarification.

Before the surgery

The following might be asked of you before having your gynecomastia surgery:

  • Getting tests for medical evaluation
  • Abstaining from nicotine
  • Abstaining from aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements
  • Taking specific medications or adjusting current medication

Postoperative care & recovery

After gynecomastia surgery, the chest is covered with gauze and bandages as the incisions heal. Thin tubes might be placed under the skin for draining any build-up of excess blood or fluids. You are instructed on what medication to use for healing and how to take care of the chest area during your recovery. A follow-up appointment is arranged.
The skin in the incision area should always be handled gently without exposure to any abrasive motion. Any form of physical straining should be avoided for at least a month after gynecomastia surgery.
About one to two weeks are needed in most cases to return to normal activities, however, you should expect to be able to see the final results of your gynecomastia surgery only after external and internal healing is complete and the swelling and bruising go down fully, which might take three to six months. The scars remaining after the surgery are permanent but do fade over time and are sometimes hidden in the natural breast contours.
It is advised to make inquires with your surgeon concerning the period immediately after the surgery and during recovery. You may have questions about where you will be placed after the surgery, what medications you will be given, and when to arrange an appointment for follow-up care.

The results of gynecomastia surgery are permanent, but can be altered through gaining weight and continuing to use certain medications and drugs which cause gynecomastia.
In some cases, multiple surgeries are needed for the best results.

Gynecomastia Frequently Asked Questions

About 2 weeks before the operation, painkillers such as aspirin should be avoided. Drugs should be discontinued in the lead time. Nicotine and alcohol should be radically reduced 3 to 4 weeks before the operation. If you are overweight, it is advisable to lose a few kilos before the operation. Our specialists should be informed about allergies or blood clotting disorders in the preliminary consultation.

One speaks of gynecomastia when the mammary gland tissue grows in a man. The additional tissue is usually benign, but may indicate breast cancer, especially in older men. In some men, gynecomastia already occurs during puberty.

In most cases, laser-assisted liposuction is successful. Not only the fatty tissue but also the firm glandular tissue can be melted. This saves large incisions in the breast. Furthermore, the laser has an effective skin tightening effect, so that even with sagging skin quality, large incisions are spared.

If you are very overweight, it is advisable to first reach an agreed target weight. Only then can adequate surgical planning be made.
